Effort Values (or EVs) are values that strenghten your Pokémon, increasing their stats, they are gained by fighting wild Pokémon. The number and type of EVs gained will depend on the strenght of the Pokémon battled.

Opposite to IVs they are not innate, so can be modified as you please by using the Ev Training Items.

EVs affect stats, increasing their value. This increasement goes proportionally to the Pokémon's level, taking more EVs for 1 stat point and gradually increasing to the 4 Evs for 1 stat point at level 100. (The proportion between EVs and level is recalculated as the Pokémon levels up)
So, at level 100, a Pokémon can have a maximum of 63 extra stat points in a certain stat, and a total maximum of 127 stat points across all stats due to the effects of EVs.

EVs are capped at 510 points for each Pokémon and 252 for each individual stat.

Gaining

There are 6 different types of EVs that can be gained by a Pokémon: HP, Attack, Defense, Special Attack, Special Defense and Speed EVs, one of each of the stats.

Defeating a wild Pokémon will let your Pokémon gain from 1 to 3 points in one particular stat, depending on the specie. To have a list of the possible EV yield refer to each Pokémon page or the Ev Yielding Chart.

An Exp. Share can be used to share the EVs gained. If the Pokémon defeating the opponent cannot gain any more EVs, all EVs are transferred to the Pokemon holding the Exp. Share. Same applies for the Exp. All.

The Pokérus, a rare Pokémon status condition, doubles the effort points gained in battle. It stacks with EV Training Items.

EV Training

The EV Training is the process of gaining and removing EVs to strenghten your Pokémon. As mentioned above, training your Pokémon is a long and time-consuming process, but it can be hastened by researching and using the EV Training Items:

  • In a Single-player world - check EV Yield page, decide on a Pokémon with a high spawn-rate and go on to hunt for that Pokémon. Assuming your Pokémon will eventually reach level 100, 252 in each stat you want to train is the norm. However, training other stats is also very common, so keeping track of the Pokémon's EVs is crucial.
  • On a Server - the process mentioned above also works, but having another player help out could speed up the process. By battling other players, you can still gain EVs. Battling other players with a team specified for EV Training will tremendously accelerate the EV-farming process.
